REGULATIONS
of the 2022 All-Ukrainian Open Music Competition “Step to Success”
І. General
1.1. This regulation determines the procedure for organizing and holding an open all-Ukrainian competition of young musicians "Step to Success" (hereinafter - the Competition).
1.2. The founder of the Competition is the Department of Culture and Tourism of the Odessa City Council (hereinafter - the founder of the Competition).
1.3. Competition organiser - Odessa Art School № 11.
1.4. Participants of the Competition are pupils of Art Schools of Ukraine up to 16 years old (hereinafter - the participants of the Competition).
1.5. The competition is supported by the Mayor of Odessa, the Odessa Regional State Administration, the Odessa Regional Philharmonic.
1.6. The purpose of the competition is to discover and support talented students with a strong artistic personalty, promote the highest level artistic integrity through the performance of music, cultivate classical musical culture among the children and youth.
1.7. The source of information and communication - muzshkola11.com.ua (hereinafter - the Website)
1.8. Founder of the Competition:
- approves the regulations of the Competition;
- forms an organizing committee for the preparation and holding of the Competition (hereinafter - the Organizing Committee);
- determines the financial order of the competition
1.9. Organizing Committee:
- provides organizational support for the Competition;
- approves the symbols and attributes of the Competition;
- considers applications of candidates for participation in the Competition, carries out preliminary selection of participants and forms the competition program;
- publishes the schedule of rehearsals and competitive auditions on the Website;
- publishes the results of the Competition and informs the participants;
- organizes the award ceremony of the winners of the Competition and the gala concert;
- provides coverage of the Competition events in print or electronic media.
1.10. Participants of the Competition are obligated to:
- to familiarise with the requirements and procedures before the beginning of the Competition;
- timely submit their applications for participation in the Competition;
- to maintain safety standards at all times, as well as regulations and rules of ethics;
1.11. Use and processing of personal data is carried out in accordance with the Law of Ukraine "On Personal Data Protection" and obtained in order to comply with the requirements of this provisions.
1.12. Interference of parents, teachers and other persons in the procedure of the Competition, in the work of the jury, and the Organizing Committee are strictly prohibited.
1.13. The timetable of the Competition is determined by the Organizing Committee and published on the Website no later than 8 months before the beginning.
1.14. Venue of the Competition - Odessa Art School № 11 (Varnenska str., 12), Odessa Regional Philharmonic (Bunina str., 15).
II.The Competition Procedure
2.1. The Competition is open to any young musician, regardless of the educational institution, form of education, level of success, availability of recommendations from the educational institution, incentives, etc.
2.2. The Competition is open to students of primary art education institutions from another countries.
2.3. The Competition has been held since 2006 once every two years in the following categories: Piano Solo Performance, Violin Solo Performance, Violin/Piano Concerto Soloist with the Orchestra . Candidates who are students at a specialist music or drama school or college must enter for the appropriate group division in the appropriate age bracket. Each category is divided into the 3 following groups: Group A - up to 9 years (inclusive); Group B - 10-12 years; Group C - 13-16 years.
2.4. Winners of previous Youth Music Competitions "Step to Success" who received diplomas of the first degree are not allowed to participate in the Competition for the same age category. The winners who received the highest award of the Competition - the Grand Prix, can no longer participate in the Competition.
2.5. The order of the participation at the Competition is determines by the Organizing Committee according to the dates of birth of competitors - from the youngest to the oldest.
2.6. The participants of the second round will be given rehearsal classes and acoustic rehearsal time on the stage of the concert hall. The duration of rehearsals is determined by the Organizing Committee depending on the number of representatives from other cities and countries.
2.7. In order to participate in the Competition, participants must submit to the Organising Committee by February 1st, 2022 the following documents:
- completed application form in Word format according to the form posted on the Website;
- a copy of birth certificate or a copy of the passport (for participants over 14 years old) in PDF format;.
- a coloured portrait photo (JPG format);
- copies of Award certificates in relevant competitions for the 3 previous years (PDF);
- a URL link to a video of the implementation of the first round program which should be posted on the website www.youtube.com in open access. The video must be recorded in a single file (the performance of each piece must be recorded as a single uninterrupted video) and show the instrument, face and hands of the artist. At the beginning of the video the participant must indicate the name and surname, as well as the fact that the recording was made specifically for the Youth Music Competition “Step to Success”.
2.8. Photo and video with a poor-quality and documents which do not meet the Competition entry requirements will be not considered or evaluated.
2.9. Organizing Committee reserves the right to photograph, record, shoot, broadcast any part of the competition. All rights, including the further using of the materials, belong to the competition.
2.10. Please send your completed application and documents to the Organising Comittee by e-mail to krokdouspihy@gmail.com.
2.11. By applying to the Competition, participants automatically accept conditions of the Competition defined in this provision;
2.12. Documents that do not meet the requirements of this provision or received by the Organizing Committee late will not be considered.
III. Requirements for contestants
Category - Piano Solo Performance
3.1. In the category Piano Solo Performance take students of piano departments of art schools in the 3 following groups: Group A - up to 9 years (inclusive); Group B - 10-12 years; Group C - 13-16 years.
3.2. There will be 2 rounds: the 1st round being based on video recordings, and the 2nd being live in Odessa. The 2nd round is open to the public.
3.3. Each participant must complete and submit a completed application that clearly indicates the direct web address of their video submission of the 1st round program. All videos should be posted for judging on YouTube (www.youtube.com) . All uploaded videos must be viewable under the public or unlisted settings.
3.4. The Jury of the Competition appointed by the Organizing Committee selects on the basis of video recordings and decides on the admission of participants to the 1st round.
3.5. The Jury of the Competition evaluates the performances of the participants of the 1st round on video recordings and sends the evaluation information to the Organizing Committee by February 10, 2022.
3.6. Based on the results of the 1st round, the Organizing Committee invites the contestants to the 2nd round of the Competition by February 20, 2022.
3.7. Repertoire requirements of the 1st round. Groups A, B, C : 1. Instructive Etude; 2. a Solo Piano work by a Ukrainian composer of cantilena character. Duration of performances: Group A: up to 6 minutes; Group B - up to 8 minutes; Group C - up to 10 minutes.
3.8. Repertoire requirements of the 2nd round. Croup A: 1. Polyphonic work by I. S. Bach; 2. a Solo Piano work of your choice from the Romantic period to the present (duration of the competition program - up to 8 minutes). Groups B, C: 1. The first movement form/sonata-allegro form of the Classical period in Western art music in late-18th-century, Vienna (J. Haydn, W.A. Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven); 2. a Solo Piano work of your choice from the Romantic period to the present (duration of the competition program: in GroupB - up to 10 minutes; in Group C - up to 15 minutes).
3.9. Competition programs should be formed on the principle of contrast.
Category - Violin Solo Performance
3.10. In the category Violin Solo Performance take students of strings departments of art schools in the 2 following groups: Group B - 10-12 years; Group C - 13-16 years.
3.11. There will be 2 rounds: the 1st round being based on video recordings, and the 2nd being live in Odessa. The 2nd round is open to the public.
3.12. Each contestant must complete and submit a completed application that clearly indicates the direct web address of their video submission of the 1st round program. All videos should be posted for judging on YouTube (www.youtube.com) . All uploaded videos must be viewable under the public or unlisted settings.
3.13. The Jury of the Competition appointed by the Organizing Committee selects on the basis of video recordings and decides on the admission of participants to the 1st round.
3.14. The Jury of the Competition evaluates the performances of the participants of the 1st round on video recordings and sends the evaluation information to the Organizing Committee by February 10, 2022.
3.15. Based on the results of the 1st round, the Organizing Committee invites the contestants to the 2nd round of the Competition by February 20, 2022.
3.16. Repertoire requirements of the 1st round. Groups B, C : 1. Instructive Etude; 2. a Solo Violin work by a Ukrainian composer of cantilena character. Duration of performances: Group B- up to 8 minutes; Group C- up to 10 minutes.
3.17. Repertoire requirements of the 2nd round. Groups B, C : 1.technical/virtuoso piece of your choice from the period of Romanticism to the present; 2. part of the violin concerto (1st Mvt. or 2nd and 3rd Mvts.) from among those which is not included in the recommended list for the nomination Concerto Soloist with the Orchestra (duration of the competition program: in GroupB - up to 10 minutes; in Group C - up to 15 minutes).
3.18. Competition programs should be formed on the principle of contrast.
Category - Violin/Piano Concerto Soloist with the Orchestra
3.19. In the category Violin/Piano Concerto Soloist with the Orchestra take students of strings and piano departments of art schools in the 2 following groups: Group B - 10-12 years; Group C - 13-16 years.
3.20. As an exception, the Organizing Committee may allow a participant under the age of 10 to participate in the Competition, provided that he or she has a strong musical talent.
3.21. There will be 2 rounds: the 1st round being based on video recordings, and the 2nd being live in Odessa. The 2nd round is open to the public.
3.22. Each contestant must complete and submit a completed application that clearly indicates the direct web address of their video submission of the 1st round program. All videos should be posted for judging on YouTube (www.youtube.com) . All uploaded videos must be viewable under the public or unlisted settings.
3.23. The Jury of the Competition evaluates the performances of the participants of the 1st round on video recordings and sends the evaluation information to the Organizing Committee by February 10, 2022.
3.24. Based on the results of the 1st round, the Organizing Committee invites the contestants to the 2nd round of the Competition by February 20, 2022.
3.25. Repertoire requirements of the 1st round: 1. A virtuoso piece; 2. Program of the 2nd round with the accompanist.
3.26. Repertoire requirements of the 2nd round: Violin Concerto with Orchestra (1st Mvt. or 2nd and 3rd Mvts.), according to the recommended list.
3.27. The participants will be given acoustic rehearsal time before the 2nd round on the stage of the concert hall with the Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra.
IV. Jury of the Competition
4.1. There are Jury Members forming the 2022 All-Ukrainian Open Music Competition “Step to Success”- Jury Panel, composed of leading artists of Ukraine and other countries, teachers of art educational institutions, teaching staff of higher art education institutions, representatives of creative unions, etc.
4.2. The founder of the Competition appoints the Jury Members of the Competition.
4.3. Jury is assisted by a secretary. The secretary does not contribute to debate on the merits of any entry, and has no vote in the balloting.
4.4. Executive Secretary of the Jury:
- The secretary is responsible for all procedural matters and ensures the rules and procedures are fairly and properly applied.
4.5. Each jury is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the process, ensuring the deliberations are conducted in accordance with the highest standards, and that all jury members are fully involved in the judging process.
4.6. Participants who are accepted to the Competition are not allowed to take any lesson or participate at any masterclass with a Juror.
4.7. The jury member will not share information about the rating process, nor the results before it is officially announced.
4.8. Following the results of the 1st round, the jury determines the participants of the 2nd round.
4.9. The winners of the Competition are determined in each age category (except for the Grand Prix)
4.10. The Jurors are requested to award points to all participating candidates as follows: points will be given on a scale from 1 to 10.
4.11. In case of the same number of points, the Chairman of the Jury has the decisive voice.
4.12. The jury has the right:
- to discharge the performance if the time limit will be exceeded;
- to divide the prizes between performers;
- the Jury is not obligated to award all the prizes;
- to award individual or with special prizes;
- to award the "Grand Prix";
- In order to determine the winner, distribute an additional 10 points among the participants who scored the highest equal number of points.
4.13. The decisions of the jury are final and not subject to appeal.
V. Financial conditions of the Competition
5.1. Expenses for the organization and holding of the Competition are covered by the budget allocations for the implementation of cultural and artistic programs, as well as sources and revenues not prohibited by current legislation of Ukraine.
5.2. Public and other organizations/individuals have the right in agreement with the Organizing Committee to establish special prizes and awards to participants of the Competition at their own expense.
5.3. Expenses for accommodation, meals, business trips of participants and accompanying persons (teachers, parents) are covered by the sending organizations or by the participants of the Competition.
VI. Awards, announcement of the results of the Competition
6.1. All the participants of the Competition will be awarded diplomas for participation.
6.2. The winners of the Competition are determined in each age category.
6.3. Laureates of the I, II, III, IV degrees will be awarded a in each category and age group.
6.4. The participant of the Competition who has demonstrated the highest level of performing skills will be awarded a cash prize of the Odessa City Council (Grand Prix).
6.5. The winners of the Competition will be awarded with special prizes and prizes from the Department of Culture and Tourism of Odessa City Council, the Department of Culture Nationalities, Religions and Protection of Cultural Heritage and patrons of the Competition.
6.6. Teachers whose students became the winners of the Competition will be awarded Certificates of Teaching Excellence and cash prizes.
6.7. The results of the Competition will be announced at the end of the 2nd round.
6.8. The award ceremony and winner’s gala concert of the Competition will take place on the stage of the Odessa Regional Philharmonic.
6.9. All prize winners must participate in the final gala concert of the Competition.
